The aspects that are design and anthropology when used together make up what is known as design anthropology. This makes the projects complex and require a complete understanding of the people who shall be using the said projects. Human values can be studied and interpreted into physical experience through design anthropology. Mostly it means different things to different people but the basic principle is that anthropologists and designers work on a project together utilizing one another’s skills.
Even beyond all the complexity of design anthropology the real benefit of this aspect is to be able to deal with the different problems in the world today. The relationship between the two fields ensures the process is smooth and is efficient. Right from the conception stage, then onto the research and finally into the development of deliverables. It becomes easier to now figure out the problem in the world and to be able to deal with it.
How does it work? First is to strike a balance in the between the designer and the anthropologist where the roles are well defined. Between the both of them they should be able to formulate a journey map so that they can know where they are going. Because the designer is visual, they are able to come up with the tools that will enable the anthropologist to represent their journey. What the anthropologist then does is to tell their client the story which has been visualized by the designer.
Given the many uses design anthropology has, there is one that has a lot of focus on and it is to give findings that are well designed to its users or audience by the use of design. The research methods are many ranging from ethnographic, to diary studies and onto testing like usability testing all while incorporating an anthropological approach. An anthropologist tries to put emphasis on putting on hold assumptions, putting on priority internal perspectives and identifying what individuals or a group is studying. When all data is collected, now this where a designer puts together the findings in order to establish a model for the purposes of understanding his or her target group. The way anthropologists report and present their research has in a great way change.
Science, data and perception on valid research are the challenges experienced with design anthropology. An anthropologist may face this challenge from time to time but managing to work around the challenges and succeeding to produce the desired result for the designer to work with a great feat for many. A good working relationship is very important in design anthropology for the designer tries to understand what the anthropologist is trying to say or the kind of message is trying to put across.
